For ten talented Bermudian-resident musicians/artists, the opportunity to put their book knowledge to work comes this summer.
PlayList Management, is conducting their annual Developing Artist Program [DAP] which offers student musicians/artists the chance to work alongside professional musical artists, producers, and the like for a full week in Atlanta, GA.
“Many of Bermuda’s young musicians are unfamiliar with the “behind the scene” aspect of the music industry. PLM provides an opportunity for our budding musicians to be exposed to the inner workings of all aspects of this profession long before they reach the critical point of a career decision.”
“Most musicians only see the performance aspect and don’t realize the amount of energy it takes to make their performance successful,” stated Theresa Minors, CEO of PlayList Management. “We are excited about being able to provide them with the chance to work alongside professional artists who have dedicated their lives to their craft.
“We have organized for the students to receive instruction at Lion’s Share Cre8tiv, Atlanta’s #1 artist development company as well as gain knowledge from professional producers, managers, independent labels, and entertainment lawyers.
“This intensive covers types of industry contracts, music production knowledge, networking opportunities and experience with various recording studios and producers in the Atlanta area. This is an exciting opportunity for our students.”
Their schedule is jammed packed with vocal/music instruction, production sessions, and even a special artist “Q&A” session. Last year, the students had the opportunity to sit and chat with Director/Actor/Producer Tommy Ford from TV’s Martin fame [pictured above].
This year, the community is encouraged to be part of their experience – an online blog has been created to share their daily activities. The students will share their thoughts, videos, pictures and more for all to see.
Additionally, PLM is encouraging individuals, as well as companies, who may wish to help sponsor a student to contact Mr. D Minors at pr.playlistmanagement@gmail.com. All funds received are marked for that specific student and their instructional cost only.

The Berkeley Institute Board of Governors announced the planned retirement of Principal Michelle Simmons and the commencement of a recruitment drive for a new Principal to assume responsibility for the School upon her retirement in June 2013.
“Mrs. Simmons who has served as Principal of The Berkeley Institute for close to twenty years will retire at the end of the 2012/2013 academic year”, said Craig Bridgewater, Chairman of the Board.
Mr. Bridgewater continued: “Under her leadership the School has undergone a huge transition as it evolved into a comprehensive learning institution and relocated to a new state of the art facility. Mrs. Simmons set international standards and challenged faculty and students to achieve academic excellence”.
The Principal is responsible to the Board of Governors for the academic leadership and day-to-day management of the School. The Berkeley Institute is an Aided School and the Board of Governors is an autonomous body which has overall strategic and administrative management responsibility inclusive of recruitment for the School’s staff.
As a part of the recruitment process the Board of Governors will consult with parents, students, teachers, the Ministry, and the business community. “These are our stakeholders” said Mr. Bridgewater, “and our aim with the stakeholder consultation phase of the process is to ensure that we have their input in refining the skills and knowledge criteria required by a new Principal to ensure that we can achieve even greater student success in accordance with international standards in the future.”
It is anticipated that the new Principal will assume leadership of The Berkeley Institute prior to September 2013.
Bermuda Commercial Bank has come on board as the primary financial sponsor for The Berkeley Institute’s Cycling Team for the current academic school year. The sponsorship will provide much needed funds to help develop the program and promote the sport amongst the youth.
The funds will be used to provide riding uniforms and equipment, and to provide local and international participation fees for some athletes. The program, which has been developed in partnership with the Bermuda Bicycle Association, is now in its fourth successful year.
Horst E. Finkbeiner, Director and COO of BCB, stated “We are thrilled to be a part of this up and coming program with The Berkeley Institute. We are encouraged by the hard work and dedication of the students and look forward to seeing their progress over the year.”
In the past, the program has produced local riding sensations Dominque Mayho, who has recently returned from training with a professional team in the South of France, and Vashon Cann who has just returned from the Dominican Republic representing Bermuda in the Caribbean Cycling Championships.
Richard North, Physical Education Teacher at the Berkeley Institute said “The assistance which we have received from Bermuda Commercial Bank has taken the club to another level, students’ aspirations are now even higher, we now have a professional looking team and ex-students as role models, students are excited to ride in their new uniforms.”
The Cycling Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday and is open to male and female students from all year levels and all abilities.
Eight secondary schools earned $30,000 each this evening [Nov 28] after their students teamed up with local charities under the “Dollars for Hours” project led by PartnerRe.
Students aged 14 to 18 from CedarBridge, Saltus, Somersfield, Berkeley, Bermuda High School, Bermuda Institute, Warwick Academy and Mount Saint Agnes all adopted a different charity and worked to help assist in their community endeavours. In return for the student’s efforts, PartnerRe donated $30,000 to each school for a total of $240,000.
“This is the seventh time that PartnerRe has paired local charities with the secondary schools, bringing our total Dollars for Hours donation close to $1.5 million since the program’s inception in 2006,” said PartnerRe President and CEO Costas Miranthis.
“As a Bermudian company, we have a genuine interest in Bermuda and in particular, its young people,” said Mr Miranthis. “The Dollars for Hours initiative makes a direct contribution to the schools, community and ultimately to the economy which depends on the success of Bermuda’s young people. We believe Dollars for Hours creates a win-win-win situation for everyone involved.”
Senator Diallo Rabain said: “On behalf of the Minister of Education, the Hon. Dame Jennifer Smith, it’s wonderful to be here once again to participate in PartnerRe Ltd.’s “Dollars for Hours” initiative.
“This evening’s event celebrates the fact that the majority of our young people are doing tremendous and exciting things in the areas of education, sports and in particular community service.
“Since 2006, under the watchful guidance of PartnerRe and some of our local charities, hundreds of Bermuda’s students have been afforded an opportunity to work towards giving back to our community.
“In the past seven years, the total contribution of the Dollars for Hours initiative has topped close to $1.5 million. And today eight schools will receive $30,000 – a total of $240,000 – thanks to the efforts of some committed students. That’s a fantastic accomplishment.
“They say there is no nobler cause than that of the giving of your time for the service of others. And thanks to the efforts of PartnerRe, our students have learned through this project that by having a good work ethic and a selfless attitude, coupled with discipline and dedication can only result in significant rewards.
“So to PartnerRe once again thank you for your generosity and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to you for your support of our young people,” concluded Senator Rabain.

Teen musical duo Hollie Hassell and Keenan Bailey — who go by the name HNK [Hollie 'n' Keenan] — have uploaded a new video of their cover version of country artist Hunter Hayes’ hit “Wanted.”
Grammy-nominated “Wanted” was released in March 2012 as the second single from Hunter Hayes’ self-titled début studio album.
Hunter Hayes was also nominated for Best New Artist and Best Country Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards.
HNK’s “Wanted” music video
Berkeley Institute students HNK have collaborated on a number of music productions in recent months including a cover of “Down”, the 2009 R&B-electropop song by British artist Jay Sean.
That song went on to sell four million copies in the United States and six million copies worldwide. Featuring rapper and Jay Sean label mate Lil Wayne, “Down” is the best-selling single by a British/European male artist in North America since Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind.”
The talented teenagers who comprise HNK began working together earlier this year.
“Hollie wanted to sing,” Keenan Bailey told Bernews “Being that I’m a singer/songwriter/producer/ recording engineer, I made her wish come true.”
HNK’s cover version of “Down”
Last year Keenan Bailey — then 17 — hit the local headlines when he wrote and released a tribute song dedicated to murder victim Joshua Robinson.
The secondary school student — who also performs under the stage name Keenan Thraxx Exodia — posted the song on YouTube on the same day of the murder at Jason’s Barbershop on North Shore in Pembroke.
Earlier this year he started posting “my soft. soothing style beats” to SoundCloud.
Hollie Hassell has also uploaded some of her songs to that on-line music site.
“HNK are putting together a mixtape set to be released in the spring.” Keenan Bailey told Bernews.
The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Berkeley Institute, Mr. Craig Bridgewater, advised that the search for a new school principal to replace outgoing Michelle Simmons who retires in June is ongoing.
A recruitment ad will be running again in the coming days as the Search and Selection Committee has not as yet identified a suitable candidate for this important leadership role. The searched commenced earlier this year.
Mr. Bridgewater said: “We take the issue of school leadership very seriously and the selection process that involves all of the Berkeley family including the Board, teachers, students and parents has proven thorough and effective”. “Our aim is to have a new principal in place prior to the start of the new school year”, he concluded.
Michelle Simmons retires at the end of this school year after some 20 years at the helm. During this period Mrs. Simmons lead the School through the transition from a selective institution at the former Berkeley Institute site to open comprehensive enrolment at the current Berkeley site.
Bermuda teen singing sensations HNK yesterday [May 1] launched a new 11-song mixtape — available here – as well as a new video to accompany their original composition “Lost In Your Eyes.”
Berkeley Institute students Hollie Hassell and Keenan Bailey — also known by his stage name Keenan Exodia — recorded the material between January and March.
The mixtape features three original songs — “Lost In Your Eyes”, “Never Let You Go” and “I Wanna Go Home” — and cover versions of “Don’t You Worry Child”, “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”, “Down”, “Man On The Moon”, “Wanted”, “Marvin’s Room” and “With You.”
Ms Hassell has been singing since she was a little girl but said she had been too shy to show her material to many people until her cousin Shania Heller arranged a meeting with aspiring performer/songwriter/producer Mr. Bailey earlier this year.
“He then wanted me to record a song with him and I said ‘yes’,” she said. “We both decided to sing ‘With You’ by Chris Brown and that was our first song that we did together.”
HNK’s “Lost In Your Eyes”
Mr. Bailey — who began taking piano lessons at the age of seven — has been writing songs, poems and stories since childhood and hopes to pursue his production skills in Canada after graduating from Berkeley later this year.
A veteran of the Chewstick Foundation’s open shows and their youth programme TWIGS [True Wisdom In Growing Souls], he hit the local headlines when he wrote and released a tribute song dedicated to murder victim Joshua Robinson.
If feedback on the mixtape is positive, HNK plan to record and release a full album of material before the end of the year.
