1255737_help_haitiThe locally produced telethon to assist earthquake ravaged Haiti entitled “To Haiti with Love” ended just after 11pm tonight with a final amount of $82,372.00 raised. As was expected, Bermudians were very generous with money pouring in through the whole event.

Premier Dr. Ewart Brown and his wife Wanda Henton-Brown, generously matched the $6,000 donations made by civil servants, with Dr. Brown calling into the telethon from the House of Assembly. Bermuda’s two oldest political parties, the UBP and PLP, made donations of $1,200 each.

Exceptionally impressive was two young students who both asked that instead of receiving birthday presents, that their family/friends instead donate to Haiti. 7 year old Sebastian Finkbeiner donated $250, and Kiara Simons donated $200.

The students of St. Georges Prep School donated $5,000, which the student body had raised through fundraisers including car washes, bake sales and grub days.

The students of Northlands Primary made a $2,000 donation they raised through a grub day.

The students of TN Tatem Middle School and Prospect Primary each made donations of $1,000.

There were two dozen pledge takers who donated their time answering calls, including Bermudian soccer great Shaun Goater, the UBP’s Jeff Sousa, Senator Michael Dunkley and Minister David Burch.

Artist Sharon Wilson donated a piece “Cats in The Cradle”, which received a winning bid of over $2,500.

The telethon was a credit to Bermuda and our people with solid performances, generous donations and an exceptional fundraising efforts from the school students of Bermuda.

Placing third out of the North American countries eligible to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games, Team Bermuda’s teenage contingent did an outstanding job at the 2010 North American Byte Championships in the Cayman Islands.

The event saw 16 races contested over five days. Held from March 10th to March 15th, the Championships served as a qualifier for the Youth Olympic Games this August in Singapore. By virtue of their top four finish, Bermuda has qualified along with US Virgin Islands, Netherlands Antilles and Cuba.

In addition to the top four team placing, four young Bermudian sailors placed in the top ten individually. 15 year old Rahiem Steede was the top Bermudian finisher with a very impressive 5th placing overall. Keeping the pressure on the other countries Steede’s teammates Kalin Hillier and Owen Siese finished 6th and 7th overall respectively, leaving no doubt that Bermuda would qualify for a coveted spot at the first ever YOG. Dimitri Stevens finished in 10th place.

A teenage high school student drew praise from the Premier after making a presentation to Cabinet yesterday, pushing for more Bermudian history to be taught in schools.

Berkeley Institute S4 student Kiaaron Minks made the presentation to Cabinet, advocating for the expansion of the current academic curriculum to include a wider and more relevant approach to Bermudian history.

The young Berkeleyite’s appeal came during a presentation by educator Max Hull who will publish a series of books for use in the public school system. Written by former reading specialist Colwyn “Junior” Burchall, The Icon Series will chronicle the lives of social justice advocates and organizations in Bermuda.

Premier Dr Brown said, “Mr. Minks represents a new breed of Bermudian. One who looks you in the eye and is unafraid to speak confidently and passionately for what he believes in. Cabinet was very impressed by his presentation and we expect great things from this young man.”

Minister: Berkeley 78.5% GCSE Pass Rate

Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith said her attendance at the Berkeley Institute prizegiving had provided her with an opportunity to “accentuate the positive” about Bermuda’s young people.

This morning [Nov 19] the Minister of Education Dame Jennifer Smith delivered a Ministerial Statement in the House of Assembly on yesterday’s Prizegiving Ceremony at Berkeley Institute, hailing the accomplishments of the school’s students.

The Minister said Berkeley’s GCSE results showed positive growth with the most significant improvement in Mathematics and English. There were 195 GCSE entries in May/June 2010 and the overall pass rate was 78.5%.

52 candidates wrote Mathematics and 89.6% of their grades were in the A – C range. To provide a point of comparison, Dame Jennifer said 58.4% of all students writing GCSE Mathematics in the UK earned grades in the A – C range.

60 students wrote GCSE English Language and of that group, 69.5% earned grades of A-C as compared to the UK National average of 64.7%.

The Minister also mentioned four students by name – Stefanny Sanchez, Marshall Stoneham, Sudan Furbert and Tashel Bean – saying they “Played an active role in the ceremony and demonstrated maturity and poise.”

In September, then-Premier Premier Brown met with seven Berkeley Institute students who successfully passed their math GCSE exam two years before most students traditionally even sit the exam; Alexandra Francis, Jumoke Stovell, Sierra Symonds, Premier Brown, Hans Peter Rozer, Azra Smith, Jadiyah Bailey and Whitney Riley.

The Minister’s statement follows below:

Mr. Speaker, it is unfortunate that so much of our television and newspaper reports highlight the negative activity of our young people. I recognise, however, that news is news because it is not an every day occurence

In fact, statistics tell us that the negative behavior we see is being committed by a minority of our young people.

Therefore it begs the question, what are the majority of our young people doing?

Mr. Speaker, yesterday, along with 3 of my colleagues, I had the privilege of attending Berkeley Institute’s Prizegiving Ceremony.

This was a celebration of the positive contribution the majority of our youth are making in schools every day of the year.

Oh yes, there were the usual speeches by the Chairman of the Board and the Principal, but the words and actions of the students took centre stage!

Principal, Mrs. Michelle Simmons, began by noting that instead of giving a long verbal report, the dry facts would be handed out at the end of the ceremony so that the focus could be on the students alone.

Mr. Speaker, I was impressed and proud of the contribution of all the Berkeley students; but I must single out a few of the outstanding students.

Stefanny Sanchez – an S3 High Honours Student, Marshall Stoneham, Sudan Furbert and Tashel Bean – all S2 High Honours Students who played an active role in the ceremony and demonstrated maturity and poise.

Guest Speaker Mr. Glenn Jones, who spoke about how to turn academic success into successful careers, had the students hanging on his every word.

Mr. Speaker, there were several success stories yesterday, but the students I have mentioned by name stand out as well-rounded models for their peers to emulate.

Mr. Speaker, we have much to celebrate as we look at the achievements of our young people and I look forward to learning about the achievements of our Cedarbridge students at their prizegiving on the 30th.

Mr. Speaker, consider the following -

At the end of term in June, two hundred and twenty-four students or 36 percent of the total student body of 630 students achieved academic honours.

Berkeley’s GCSE Results showed positive growth with the most significant improvement in Mathematics and English.

There were 195 GCSE entries in May/June 2010 and the overall pass rate was 78.5%.

Fifty-two candidates wrote Mathematics and 89.6% of their grades were in the A – C range.

In comparison, 58.4% of all students writing GCSE Mathematics in the UK earned grades in the A – C range.

Sixty students wrote GCSE English Language and of that group, 69.5% earned grades of A-C as compared to the UK National average of 64.7%.

Mr. Speaker, one week ago I told the Bermuda Union of Teachers that, “all is not well in Education” – and that is true! However, it is also true that all is not lost!

Mr. Speaker, as I continue to focus on those issues that need to be addressed within the Education System, I am also going to highlight and celebrate the successes. I believe that it is important to hold up and encourage hardworking dedicated teachers and hardworking dedicated students even while we work to ensure that all students have a positive school experience.

Mr. Speaker, Berkeley’s Prizegiving offers a perfect opportunity for us to accentuate the positive.

Mr. Speaker, I have previously stated that I intend to keep this House and the community at large informed about what we are doing in Education. This means that I will share both the good and the bad.

Thank you.

Earlier today [Feb 4] The Berkeley Institute marked World Cancer Day by presenting Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre with a donation of $9,000, made up of funds they had raised through a variety of fundraisers.

The Berkeley Community worked hard to raise these funds through a series of events including: a charity walk, bake sale, and grub day. The students, in an exemplary fashion, also raised funds by selling Christmas ornaments they
created in honour of loved ones affected by cancer.

Ashley DaCosta, an Education Officer accepted the cheque on behalf of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. “We were genuinely surprised at the size of the donation and were equally impressed by the range of the events and the level of school spirit demonstrated”. Ms. DaCosta informed the students that “All of the funds raised would be used to upgrade diagnostic equipment and patient support services at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre; thereby increasing early cancer detection and decreasing the time between screening and diagnosis.”

Alton also thanked people including his school Principal and sponsors before offering those present a ride in the 13-foot boat.

Those present included Minister of National Security David Burch and Senator Laverne Furbert, who both spoke at the launch, congratulating him on his efforts. Senator Furbert said Alton is one of many of the young people in Bermuda doing great things, while National Security Minister David Burch congratulated the teenager, and said they will assist him in achieving the next step in his dreams.

Over 60 Students Receive Technical Certifications

Last week Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Kim Wilson presented over sixty Berkeley Institute students with technical certifications during the school’s annual “Technical Showcase” on May 27th.

The majority of students received their National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certificates, transcripts and wallet cards, which they can use locally and internationally as stepping stones. NCCER is an accrediting body for the Construction industry.

This morning [June 1] Minister Wilson spoke about the technical certifications in the Senate, saying “While Bermuda does not have a technical school, I trust that as a result of the recent achievements of the many students at the Berkeley Institute that it is clear that high quality technical education is being delivered via the senior secondary schools at a level that is preparing students for industry.”

The full statement follows below:

Madam President, I am delighted to share with Honourable Members today how pleased I was to present the Berkeley Institute students with technical certifications last week.

Over 60 students were presented with certifications during the school’s annual “Technical Showcase” on May 27th.

The majority of these students received their National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certificates, transcripts and wallet cards. Students who have earned these industry credentials are able to use them locally and internationally as stepping stones in whatever careers they intend to pursue.

Madam President, it should be noted that the certification programmes are also delivered at Cedarbridge Academy and the Bermuda College.

The NCCER is an accrediting body for the Construction industry.

The National Training Board in partnership with the Bermuda Construction Association provides the opportunity for the curriculum to be taught in the local school system. This accreditation process assures that students and vocational professionals receive quality training based on uniform standards and criteria. The curriculum is:

  • competency based with measurable objectives;
  • developed by industry experts and educators;
  • modular in format to allow flexibility and custom task training;
  • compliant with Apprenticeship bodies within the US; and
  • portable with industry recognized credentials.

Generally, individuals will go on to learning additional skills by entering an Apprenticeship Program.

Madam President, while Bermuda does not have a technical school, I trust that as a result of the recent achievements of the many students at the Berkeley Institute that it is clear that high quality technical education is being delivered via the senior secondary schools at a level that is preparing students for industry.

Madam President, education and certification are key components of the overall workforce development initiative.

Thank you Madam President.

The statement said they “continue to actively consider cost cutting measures to achieve greater savings in accordance with its reduced operating budget for fiscal year 2011/12.”

“All should be reminded that the school’s operating (capitation) budget allocation was cut by approximately 22% which translates to $1.4m.”

Chairman of the Board, Craig Bridgewater said: “It is important to note that in accordance with our discussions with the Bermuda Public Services Union (BPSU) that a number of measures are being considered and that no final decisions have been made.”

“Our primary objective is to ensure the delivery of the highest standard of education for our student body and we will not compromise or cut corners in this area.”

Mr. Bridgewater continued: “I take this opportunity to express my disappointment with the fact that the BPSU saw fit to make the details of our private and confidential consultation public.”

“Any discussion that might alter the working conditions of our staff is a sensitive matter which requires much deliberation and the actions of the BPSU at this time are unfortunate.”

“The Board of Governors is expected to make a final decision with respect to additional cost cutting measures prior to the beginning of the next school year,” said the statement.

Ministry Response: Berkeley Institute Budget

Today [Aug.22] Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education Warren Jones responded to comments made by Bermuda Public Services Union [BPSU] Vice-President Mr. Jason Hayward regarding staffing and budget matters at the Berkeley Institute.

Mr. Jones said, “Whilst the nature of discussions between the Berkeley Institute and BPSU regarding the terms of work for support staff are a private matter between the two entities, I must respond to what I feel are irresponsible and inaccurate comments made by the President of the BPSU.

“It is no secret that the budget of the Ministry of Education was cut some 10% effective April 1, 2011. This cut has had ramifications across the education system with all schools including the Berkeley Institute having to make adjustments to meet the needs of students.”

“In a meeting with the BPSU last week, I informed the members present of the reality of our budget allocation and that our schools are seeking to work within that allocation.

“That said, the Country has seen the steps taken thus far to meet that budget allocation. Staff cuts were announced in June across the system. However, we are convinced that we can do more with less, and the reality is that everything remaining as is, is not an option.

“The Minister of Education has made it clear that where students have a need, that need will be met. The education of our students is of paramount importance. It is the responsibility of the Ministry of Education to ensure the educational needs of students are met and that funding is provided for the operation of educational programmes.

“This is not a responsibility that the Ministry takes lightly. We monitor the budgetary situation of all of our maintained schools and have relationships with our aided schools who in turn advise us of their budgetary status.”

“As a part of our responsibility, we must also keep the Cabinet informed of any concerns which arise related to our budget and or educational programmes. I can assure the public that the Ministry is well aware of the budgetary situation and that there will certainly be no school closures as a result of any budgetary shortfall.”

The Berkeley Institute board of governors today [Nov.23] confirmed that a fight involving several male students took place at the school during the lunch period on Monday [Nov. 21].

All involved were students currently enrolled at the school.

The incident, which did not require emergency services intervention, was quickly resolved by the school’s on-campus security services.

The board said there were no major injuries to any of the students and following an investigation by the school’s administration, the students will be disciplined accordingly.

Principal Michelle Simmons said: “We have had a terrific start to our school year without any major incidents and we are pleased that the programmes that we have in place are proving effective in developing and maintaining a harmonious school environment.

“This notwithstanding, given that any school environment is a microcosm of the broader society, we can expect that there will be negative situations from time to time. I take this opportunity to assure the public that our security protocols are such that these incidents can be quickly resolved.

“The Berkeley Institute continues to operate as a safe and productive learning environment.”

The Berkeley Institute and their partner charity The Chewstick Foundation won Capital G’s 2011 Youth Give Initiative.

The Berkeley team competed against two other school teams to win a total of $12,500, of which $10,000 is to be donated to their partner charity while the remaining 2,500 can be used for any school initiative of the team’s choosing.

The announcement was made at the Youth Give Awards luncheon held at the Elbow Beach Hotel following the teams’ final presentations in front of a panel of judges.

The two additional school teams which rose to the challenge of the Youth Give initiative this year and competed for the first place award were Mount St. Agnes Academy, which partnered with the Salvation Army, and Saltus, which partnered with PALS. Both school teams were awarded of special prize of $2,500 each to benefit their partner charity.

Capital G’s Youth Give initiative was launched in 2009. The project is designed to empower Bermuda’s youth to ‘Give Back’ and develop awareness of the need to create a sustainable giving community across generations.

The competing Youth Give teams were required to demonstrate a clear and comprehensive ‘giving plan’ by identifying the target group they wanted to support, addressing their charitable focus and providing the measurable objectives and anticipated outcomes of their giving plan in both written and presentation form.

James Gibbons, Chairman, Capital G Bank Limited said it was a great pleasure for him to see the energy, commitment and sincerity that the students had invested in their Youth Give projects this year.

He said of the winning Berkeley Institute team: “Your plan truly has room to expand for years to come. You have proved amongst your school peers that the ‘open mic’ performance idea you presented in partnership with Chewstick helped your peers to discover hidden talent they didn’t know they possessed.

“You were able to convey the joy they felt when their talent and ability was recognized by the school faculty and principal. Their experience gave them a new voice, and they feel empowered by it.”

Capital G Youth Give school and charity teams are as follows:

  • First Place – The Berkeley Institute $2,500 – The Chewstick Foundation $10,000
  • Second Place – Mount Saint Agnes Academy – The Salvation Army $2,500
  • Third Place – Saltus Grammar School – PALS $2,500

Youth Give judges were:

  • James Gibbons, Chairman, Capital G Bank Limited
  • Diallo Rabain, Senator & Junior Education Minister, Bermuda Ministry of Education
  • Pam Barit-Nolan, Executive Director, Centre on Philanthropy
  • Michael DeCouto, SVP, Marketing, Capital G Limited

George Berkeley’s ‘Bermuda Group’

In 1729, Anglo-Irish cleric and philosopher Dean George Berkeley [1685-1753] set out from London to found a college in Bermuda “for the better supplying of churches in our foreign plantations and for converting the savage Americans to Christianity.”

Bermuda would provide the ideal setting for the philosopher’s social and educational experiment.

“Young Americans, educated in an island at some distance from their own country, will more easily be kept under discipline till they have attained a complete education,” he said.

While on the continent, they “might find opportunities of running away to their countrymen.”

But being in Bermuda would prevent the Native American youngsters from “returning to their brutal customs, before they were thoroughly imbued with good principles and habits.”

Berkeley’s friend John Wainwright commissioned a portrait of the members of the expedition from John Smibert, a minor Scottish painter whom Berkeley had invited to teach art in the Bermuda college.

Painter John Smilbert’s “Bermuda Group”

The painting — titled “The Bermuda Group (Dean Berkeley and His Entourage)” – was started in London and completed after the group arrived in Newport, Rhode Island to await additional funding for their Bermuda college.

Although Wainwright did not accompany Berkeley to the New World, Smibert places him prominently in the foreground.

Dean Berkeley stands at the right next to his infant son Henry, his wife Anne, and her companion Miss Handcock. The two wigged gentlemen are John James and Richard Dalton, administrators for the proposed new Bermuda college.

At the far left, looking out at the viewer, stands the artist himself. When the Bermuda college scheme failed, Smibert, the first academy-trained painter to work in the American colonies, established a studio in Boston, where he became the city’s most sought-after portraitist, enjoying a lofty professional reputation. “The Bermuda Group” would remain his most ambitious work.

As the most sophisticated group portrait painted in the British colonies during the first half of the 18th century, it was a source of inspiration to numerous artists during the succeeding 80 years. It now hangs at Yale University.

Bermuda’s Berkeley Institute — opened at Samaritan’s Lodge on Court Street in 1897 — took its name from the clergyman whose plan to establish a college in Bermuda had foundered more than a century earlier. The Berkeley Educational Society had been established by a racially mixed group of Bermudians in 1879 to revive his vision of a college in Bermuda and spent 18 years raising funds to establish the new school.

The Californian city of Berkeley is also named after the Christian philosopher.
